Frequently Asked QuestionsQ. Where can I place a generator during power outages?A. Generators should always be placed at least fifteen feet from any opening like a window, door or vent around your home. The exhaust should be directed away from your home and your neighbors. Also never use it inside your attached garage. Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless poison gas that is produced from the burning of fossil fuels and solid fuels like wood and paper that leaves an ash after burning. If you have to run a generator, be sure to invest in a carbon monoxide detector to alert you to the presence before it's too late. Q. Is it safe to use kerosene heaters inside my home?A. There are some heaters that are safe for use indoors, kerosene heaters are considered un-vented heating appliances and should only be used in well ventilated areas. Follow all manufacturer directions for safe operation. Never use an un-vented heating appliance in your home as deadly carbon monoxide is produced and may cause death or serious injuries to children and the elderly sooner than other members of your family. Q. What should I do if my Smoke Detector is Beeping?A. if your smoke detector is chirping once every few minutes the batteries are in need of replacement. If it is constantly beeping it is detecting fire conditions somewhere in your home. Get everyone out of the house and call 911. The fire department will come to your home and determine if there is a fire, or if the detector is malfunctioning. Please do not call the fire station directly, in order to properly determine which units need to come to your home all runs have to originate from our Central 911 Dispatch Center. Q. How do I get a copy of a report that B.F.P.D. Made?A. Requests for copies of run reports can be made in person at our fire station Monday thru Friday from 9AM to 4PM at our fire station at 4101 Bardstown Road. If you need Directions visit our Contact Page. Q. Do you offer free smoke detectors?A. At this time we do not have any free smoke detectors to distribute. Smoke detectors can be purchased at hardware stores and many Department Stores. We recommend Detectors with a Tamper Proof Ten- Year Lithium Battery.
