FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 20, 2003 BUECHEL FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICTEarly morning tragedy avoided in Buechel TownhouseFirefighters from Buechel and Black Mudd responded to a reported fire at 02:35 this morning to find a woman and child precariously trapped on the roof of a small overhang, while thick black smoke billowed overhead. The family was asleep when the fire started in the kitchen and spread into the stairway leading to the second floor. The mother and three children escaped through a second floor window and were assisted to the ground by the first arriving engine (3734) with a 14' roof ladder. A few tense moments passed while command officers verified with the father that all children and adults were accounted for. Once everyone was confirmed to be out safely, firefighters gained control of the spreading fire before it extended to the neighboring units. The townhouses were built in the early 1970's and equipped with hard-wired detectors in the early 1980's when a local ordinance was passed requiring there installation. The property owner arrived shortly after the fire was declared controlled and praised the firefighters for their efforts. Louisville Metro Police were called to investigate the fire only as a precaution since the mother and three children were transported to a local hospital with smoke inhalation and minor injuries. Officials from the Red Cross were on scene to assist with the families immediate needs. There were no firefighter injuries and no equipment lost or damaged, all in all it was a successful operation. At this time the fire is still listed as under investigation, however the circumstances are not considered suspicious or intentional. For More Information Contact:
