Crusade For Children

It's that time of the year again. The first week of June the Buechel fire department will be Collecting Money for the Crusade for Children. The WHAS Crusade for Children collects money for agencies, schools, and hospitals to better the lives of special needs children. The Crusade has raised more than $133 Million since it's establishment in 1954. The Buechel Fire Department has collected over a million dollars and we need the help of everyone in the community again this year. We collect money in a variety of ways. We have volunteers assist us in door to door collections throughout our district. We try to knock on every single door in our 8.8 square mile district in about a 48 hour period and it's no easy task. We could never accomplish this without a lot of dedicated volunteers. Most longtime Louisvillians are also aware we collect donations at our roadside collection, our main intersection is at Bardstown and Goldsmith. In addition to our efforts Honorary Buechel Firefighter Kevin Adams organizes a roadside collection at the corner of Bardstown and Watterson Trail.

Unfortunately The Crusade has received some negative attention in the news this past year. A fire department official in another district has been accused of misappropriating money that had been donated to The Crusade. Whether these allegations are found to be true or false we are saddened by the fact that the public perception of the Crusade for Children could possibly be tarnished. The Crusade for Children office and the Buechel Fire Protection District has reviewed how money collected is secured, audited, and accounted for. We have always taken steps to ensure that every cent collected goes to help special needs children. Feel free to review the Cash Handling Procedures we will be using.

For more information about the Crusade for Children organization take a look at their website www.whascrusade.org

We can't possibly list every donation on our website but we will list some on this page during the crusade collections. If you would like your name included in this list or even you business logo please e-mail Sergeant Cody Weiss.

The Foresters hold their monthly meetings at our firehouse and have made a generous donation to the Crusade for Children as they have for the past few years. We would also like to thank them for their donation of several teddy bears for us to give out to children during fire and medical runs throughout the year.

Change your Clock Change Your Battery

Smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries need to be changed at least once a year. So when you set your clocks ahead, remember to change the batteries in your smoke alarms, too. Once you’ve changed the batteries, be sure to test the alarms. This simple act cuts the risk of dying in a home fire nearly in half. A lifesaving reminder from the change your clock change your battery ® program, from the Buechel Fire Protection District, energizer ® brand batteries, and The International Association of Fire Chiefs.

If you live in the Buechel Fire Protection District and need help installing your smoke detector or changing your batteries e-mail AJones@buechelfire.com or call the station at 502-491-0085 and ask to speak with the Shift Captain. Residents of Metro Louisville can call MetroCall at 311 or 502-574-5000 to find out which Fire Department covers where they live or work.

Jo Gabhart Retires After 50 Years of Service

Gratitude goes to Johanna Gabhart (Jo) for her great service and dedication to the Buechel Fire Protection District as well as the people of Buechel. She is retiring after serving over 50 years with the department as the treasurer in which she began in January of 1959.

Jo was born in Stanford KY and moved to Louisville when she was 12 then graduated from Jeffersontown High School. Afterward she attended Business College then began her employment at Bank of Louisville where she worked for 10 years. She later quit the bank to begin a family with her husband and they had a son (Roger) and step daughter (Bobbie Sue). Jo went back to work for PNC bank later retiring after 24 years. In January of 1959 the Board of Directors of the Buechel Fire Department Inc approached Jo about becoming the part-time treasurer for the department in which she accepted and has continued to serve until her retirement on June 30, 2009. She also served on that Board of Directors from February of 1990 until June of 1995.

Words alone cannot show enough gratitude for her dedication and love for the members of the department and the job she has done.

Thank you Jo for your years of service, friendship and guidance you will truly be missed.
