Picnic for Firefighters and Civic Leaders
Re-Deployment of Radio ChannelsBased on reviews of dispatch systems across the country BFPD along with the rest of Jefferson County Fire will soon change the way we utilize (Re-Deploy) our existing radio channels. This change will begin initially as a sixty day trial period beginning on May 17, 2009 at 08:00 hours. Under this new plan all Jefferson County Fire Departments will conduct their primary operations from one common channel. When we are dispatched on a High Priority run the metrosafe communications dispatch center will notify us to switch our operations to one of three secondary operations channels. This is a change from the way that we have conducted radio operations for the last thirty years and is in keeping with the key mission of the Best Practices Committee, to standardize communication processes. The details of this trial are outlined in the pdf Re-Deployment of Radio Channels. All members will need to have their Motorola Minitor Pagers reprogrammed as a part of this change, Additional details will follow. Social NetworkingIn an effort to increase communication with our members and the Buechel community we have created a page on Facebook. Visitors to our page on Facebook are able to view and post pictures and communicate with other fans of BFPD. Check out our page on Facebook today and become a fan to receive updates. We have also created a Twitter account www.twitter.com/BFPD. We are utilizing the Twitter service to send "Tweets" about incident information, and department news. Anyone who has a free Twitter account can subscribe to receive instant updates delivered to either their e-mail inbox or cellular phone via text message. In addition we have added a department news section to our website (below the navigation buttons of our home page) that will automatically show our updates to anyone who views our website. This exciting new use of technology allows our fire department public information officers and webmaster to instantly share important information and media releases instantly, sometimes even from the scene of a fire via our mobile phones. If you are the member of another Fire Department and would like to speak with us about our experiences with social networking or get help with setting things up e-mail our webmaster, Sergeant Cody Weiss Open HouseOn Friday October 10th the Buechel Fire Protection District hosted an open house and invited the community to come to our fire station for a tour and to enjoy a free chili supper. Wind Storms Cause Damage To Buechel Community
On Sunday September 14th strong winds that damaged trees and power lines struck Buechel. This resulted in multiple calls for service, 18 volunteer and career firefighters responded to over 45 calls for service. If you or someone you know was affected by the wind storms, The American Red Cross Disaster Relief Website provides valuable information about what to do after a storm. Please Remember to stay away from downed power lines. Assume that all damaged power lines are still energized until Louisville Gas and Electric has removed them. During the storm we placed red or yellow caution tape around many downed power lines, if you see that this tape has fallen down please put it back up or call the firehouse at (502) 491-0085. Visit the Storm Information Page of Louisville Gas and Electric for up to date utility information. You may contact Louisville Gas and Electric at (502) 589-3500 to report a downed power line or power outage. If you will be using a portable generator during a power outage please read this Portable Generator Safety Information from the American Red Cross If your home has been damaged please remember to stay safe while cleaning up damage. Do not remove trees if power lines are near the fallen tree. If you will be making an insurance claim as a result of this storm The Kentucky Office of Insurance has prepared a packet to help answer any questions you may have. After the Storm Has Passed: Settling Disaster Claims, Who to Call and What to Do may be downloaded in Adobe .pdf form. Firefighters For A Cure

The Buechel Fire Protection District is Proud to announce the addition of three new full time paid firefighters. These new members will work on a 24-on/48-off rotating shift schedule. The additions to our three platoons will now allow us to staff our firehouse with four persons 24 hours a day. These new Firefighters completed an extensive hiring process involving a written exam, physical agility test, and a panel interview. Thank You To Our Part Time EmployeesFor several years Buechel has employed part-time firefighters that worked during the week from 8am to 4pm to meet the staffing requirements of our district while many of our Volunteer Members are unavailable to make runs because of their full-time jobs. As a result of our new expanded staffing the Buechel Fire Protection District has decided to eliminate these part-time firefighter positions. We want to thank our part-time firefighters for their dedicated service to the Buechel community. We wish them luck in all of their future endeavors.
